Technology Commercialization

Several Technology Commercialization Programs and Initiatives were created, enhancing Arizona’s science and technology core competencies and promoting entrepreneurship:

  • Under the leadership of Mike Fong, CEO, Calence, Inc., and Chair of the Technology Commercialization and Entrepreneurship Committee a new central online resource center – AzTechBizDev.com – was created to support innovation and technology development statewide.

  • For a complete summary of the Technology Commercialization and Entrepreneurship Committee's recommendations, please click here

  • The Arizona Center for Innovation, Arizona Technology Enterprises, and ASU Technopolis are instrumental in providing expert business assistance and commercialization efforts to technology entrepreneurs.

  • BIO 5 Institute (UA) and the Biodesign Institute (ASU) continued their focus on developing a strong life sciences sector in Arizona

  • Arizona universities revised and updated their websites: ASUNAUUA.

  • In 2005, the Arizona Water University was created; its purpose is to ensure that Arizona has the tools needed for sustainable water supplies; to provide enhanced opportunities for water resources education, and to expand the state’s water research and technology development.

  • The ASU/UA Arizona Biomedical Collaborative is building a joint research facility as part of the Phoenix Biomedical Campus.

  • The newly formed C-Path Institute at UA in collaboration with the Stanford Research Institute and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will create innovative programs in education and research that enable the safe acceleration of the process for developing new medical products.

  • ASU Technology Expo and UA Innovation Showcase highlight technologies developed at Arizona’s universities.

  • The ASU/Mayo joint seed-fund and the ASU Catalyst Fund (seeded jointly by ASU and the ASU Research Park) have been established to provide proof of concept funding to more rapidly prepare technology for commercialization.
These results are the collaborative efforts by the Arizona Department of Commerce, Arizona Governor’s Office, Arizona State University, Arizona Technology Council, Bioscience Steering Committee, Commerce and Economic Development Commission, Flinn Foundation, Government Information Technology Agency, Governor’s Council on Innovation and Technology, Northern Arizona University, Southern Arizona Tech Council, and University of Arizona.
