Call to Order
Chairman Ed Zito called
the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. and thanked Bob Hagen, Chair of the Southern
Arizona Tech Council for hosting the council meeting.

Sandra Watson provided an update on the economic impact analysis being conducted by ASU on behalf of the GCIT, Arizona Department of Commerce, Arizona Technology Council and the Southern Arizona Tech Council. Also, Sandra is working with America West, “In-Flight Magazine,” to develop an insert in their publication on the Council and its activities. Sandra recognized Jane Larson, Arizona Republic, for the work that she is doing to highlight the importance of innovation and technology development in the State of Arizona.
Ed Zito welcomed the Governor. The Governor gave an update on the budget and expressed her support for the Arizona Department of Commerce.
Drs. Walter Plosila and Adrian Roberts gave their presentation on Positioning AZ’s Public Research Universities: Science and Technology Strengths for AZ’s future.

Dr. Rob Melnick gave his presentation on Seeds of Prosperity, Public Investment in S&T Research, Prop 301 at ASU.
March minutes will be approved at the next council meeting.
Capital Formation – Quinn Williams, Chair, provided an update of the Capital Formation Committee. The following three subcommittees have been formed: Tax Policy, Coordination and Education, and Venture Capital. A brief description of the missions for each subcommittee was given.
Technology Business Infrastructure – Pat Stoner, Chair, provided an overview of the work currently underway for the Technology Business Infrastructure committee. Pat identified three areas of focus: Arizona’s Technology Roadmap, Workforce Development and Education. Each area, along with supporting the supply chain efforts of the Arizona Department of Commerce and the two regional technology councils, will be further analyzed to determine specific involvement by GCIT.
Technology Development & Transfer – Nina Ossanna, Chair, provided a status report for Technology Development and Transfer committee. Bill Hardin, Co-Chair, discussed the activities at the legislature as they relate to the two tech transfer bills currently being considered.
The next Governor’s Council on Innovation and Technology meeting will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2003 at 4:00 p.m. at 1700 W. Washington Street, 2nd Floor Conference Room, Phoenix, Arizona.
Chairman Ed Zito adjourned the meeting at 5:00 p.m.
